What's in the A1 Course

European language levels go from A1 to C2. A1 is for complete beginners 👶: people who have never learned German before.

So what will you actually learn? The basics you need to get by: introducing yourself, ordering at a café, asking for directions, telling someone you don't understand yet. Real phrases you'll use from day one.

We cover vocabulary, reading, grammar, and comprehension, but always connected to real situations, not abstract exercises. By the end of the course you'll be able to hold a simple conversation with a native speaker.

As a welcome gift, I include a bonus session on German idioms and expressions 😆, the kind of thing you won't find in a textbook.

Here’s the official definition of A1, just so you know what the level means:

An A1 speaker can understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases. They can introduce themselves and ask others simple questions: where they live, who they know, what they have. They can interact in a simple way as long as the other person speaks slowly and clearly.

Your path through A1

A concrete plan, week by week. Here's exactly what we build together in the A1 group course.

  1. Week 1–2 — Introductions & greetings. Introduce yourself, say where you're from, greet people and ask simple questions.
  2. Week 3–4 — Numbers, time & ordering. Numbers, dates and ordering at a café or restaurant — your first real conversations.
  3. Week 5–6 — Asking for directions. Getting around, asking where things are, understanding simple answers.
  4. Week 7–8 — Everyday life. Shopping, talking about your day, likes and dislikes.
  5. Week 9–10 — Simple past & connecting ideas. Tell someone what you did, connect sentences, keep a conversation going.
  6. Week 11–12 — Review & real conversation. We put it all together: hold a real, simple conversation with a native speaker.

Pace: 2 lessons per week (2 × 45 minutes = a 90-minute weekly session), so most students feel comfortable holding simple conversations after roughly 12 weeks.

I've been teaching German to students from all over the world for over 15 years.

I have a degree in Linguistics from LMU Munich, which technically makes me a grammar nerd 🤓. But don't worry, we'll have fun with the language, putting the focus on breaking the ice 🧊 with real-life conversations.

Teaching something as complex as quantum physics... 🙃... or German language isn't easy.

So what makes it work? Two things: empathy and commitment. Empathy means connecting with your class and adapting your style to them. For example, breaking an intense grammar session into smaller chunks before students get tired and tune out.

And commitment? It means the course is cut ✂️ to fit your needs. I look for the best explanations, the resources that actually work for you, so you can learn in a relaxed, enjoyable way.

How the Course Works

Almost everyone knows what working from home feels like by now, and online lessons work the same way.

We meet on **Microsoft Teams** for each live session. You'll need a computer or tablet with a camera, a headset, and a stable internet connection. Plus the course textbook. I'll tell you which one when you join.
